OLD KILPATRICK PARISH CHURCHYARD, Dumbarton Road, Old Kilpatrick
ACCESS : Easy access. Check service and event times.
Listed B (together with the church).
There are a number of interesting tombstones here.
Canmore tells of one with interlaced carvings which was found in 1886, when the Auchentorlie tomb was opened to admit the burial of Andrew Buchanan Esq., and now stands in the churchyard by the side of a West Highland sepulchral slab which was found at the same time. It is the lower part of a mutilated cross-shaft of red sandstone, 2 feet 9 inches high by 1 foot 3 inches wide by 8 inches thick, sculptured in relief on four faces... [Canmore].
Another is an efigy of a soldier in armour. Presumbly meant as a flat cover slab, it stood upright against a wall.
Names to look out for are Hamilton, Buchanan and Geils.
This small building has a stone plaque on it inscribed :
THE
BURIAL PLACE
OF THE FAMILY OF
HAMILTON OF BARNS
1575 TO 1887
This is a corbel detail as supporting the eaves stone. Most others are very weathered.
This knight in armour leans against a west wall of the church, but would have been laid flat. There is no inscription.
This heavy cubic mausoleum has 3 plaques on the west wall, each in memory of members of the Buchanan family of the 19th century.
This interesting and elegant one has cast iron pointed arches designating the extent of the burial plot. The memorial behind is ornate, pvery pointed and Gothick. The inscription is a bit worn, but we can make out the first lines:
IN MEMORY

ELDEST SON OF GEN GEILS
OF ARDMORE
BORN 22 DEC. 1772 (?) DIED (????)
