ANTONINE WALL : CLEDDANS FORTLET, between Hardgate and Bearsden, Easting/Northing, 250825, 672251
ACCESS : This is no longer visible. It sits alongside a farm track within private farm property.
Scheduled Monument and World Heritage Site.
Little can be seen of this section of the Wall, let alone the fortlet. At this point the Antonine Wall would have consisted of a rampart, ditch, berm (area between rampart and ditch) and upcast mound. The Antonine Wall has been flattened along this section, although slight traces of the ditch survive to the west of this section and just to the east of Cleddans Farm. Remnants of the fortlet are located about 250m west of Cleddans Farm.
The fortlet pre-dated the construction of the Wall.
This distance slab from the Cleddans Fortlet is on display in the Huntarian Museum, University of Glasgow. It translates as "For the Emperor Caesar Titus Aelius Hadrianus Antoninus Augustus Pius, father of his country, a detachment of the XX Legion Valeria Victrix built 3000ft (of the Wall)".
