WAR MEMORIALS : ALEXANDRIA
CHRISTIE PARK : ALEXANDRIA WAR MEMORIAL
Listed B.
This is properly known as Bonhill Parish War Memorial or the Alexandria Cenotaph. The Vale of Leven Project (see link below) gives comprehensive details about how the memorial came to be.
It is constructed of Auchenheath stone from Lanarkshire with tablets of Welsh slate. There are 363 names of those who lost their lives during the First World War with local connections. To those have subsequently been added those who fell in the Second World War.
It is clear that inspiration for the design comes from that at Whitehall as designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens.
