BIRDS OF PREY

West Dunbartonshire ranges in habitat from woodland to muirland, some rocky outcrops to inland and coastal waters. These provide suitable environments for a range of birds of prey. Scotland is well known for its birds of prey, but what we find locally is limited by that habitat.

Looking more widely across Scotland we can find : Gold Eagle, Common Buzzard, White-Tailed Sea Eagle, Hen Harrier, Short-Eared Owl, Long-Eared Owl, Osprey, Merlin, Kestrel, Hobby, Barn Owl and the Tawny Owl. Most of these will be beyond our district, but there are some that can be seen here. By their very nature, you are unlikely to often see them close at hand except fleetingly. But there is another option on our doorstep - the Loch Lomond Bird of Prey Centre at Lomond Shores at Balloch.
