WEATHER

The seasons are discussed elsewhere. Weather naturally defines seasons, but then so too do many other experiences. See SEASONS

Also see FLOODING

Every day we look out of the window to see what we can expect for the day and perhaps look online for a forecast. We are fortunate that here in West Dunbartonshire we have fairly mild climate, but from time to time find that it can be excessive – heavy rain or strong winds. Global warming seems to be giving us less snow and ice than in the past over winter. From a localised point of view that could be a welcome thing. From a broader perspective though it can be extremely dangerous.

PRECAUTIONS

Storm Eowyn in 2025 discussed below was the first time warnings were issued with a siren and message on every smartphone across the country. All schools and most oficial and commercial buildings were closed for the day, some even after that. All rail travel in the Scottish Central belt was cancelled until a full survey had been completed and remedial action taken - in some areas some days later. T.he warning levels were maintained at RED for some time.

Remember that trees can be damaged, but only fall sometime later. In other words, treat them with extreme caution.

Damage to buildings may be similar and not immediately obvious. Water ingress within masonry and older sandstone can weaken them structurally. Moisture within masonry can freeze and force off bits, sometimes up to several tons and very dangerous.

All homes should keep candles and / or torches handy. It is terrible trying to find things in the dark if there is a power failure. Just after the 2025 Storm Eowyn there was a rush on candles in West Dunbartonshire and nearby. Small gas stoves are brilliant if you have one handy. Simply being able to have a hot drink or meal is so reassuring and fends off the cold. These were all quickly sold out after storm Eowyn in 2025.
