STAG'S HORN FUNGUS / CANDLESNUFF FUNGUS : Xylaria hypoxylon
This is a small fungus, common, but often overlooked. It is totally dependent on rotting wood and therefore usually found on branches that have fallen to the ground. It has an erect, stick-like or forked fruiting body sometimes likened to a stag's antlers. The tip is white and powdery, while the lower stalk is black.
Similar species may be other colours.
An example from Fishers Wood in November.
