A plaque on the lodge wall declares :

GIFTED TO THE INHABITANTS
OF DUMBARTON

AND

1885.
The grounds were mostly those of former mansion house of Levengrove which was demolished circa 1880. Mr MacLennan of Glasgow parks made a report on the grounds, and it may have been his plan which was used for the lay-out. [HES].
