Malleny Gardens, Balerno near Edinburgh

Architectural heritage is not limited to grand buildings, but also include those smaller built features, picturesque, yet functional. Malleny Gardens are described by the National Trust for Scotland as the place to come for quiet contemplation in beautiful surroundings. There is an interesting house, outbuildings, small fountain, glasshouse etc and just outside the garden is a doocot with an unusual saddle-backed roof, but what I have chosen here is the simple wooden door through the garden's enclosing stone wall.

This slatted wooden door is overlaid with criss-crossing metalwork and has very heavy security bolts. One begins to wonder quite what is so precious behind it. It has a certain aura of mystery.
