John Macintosh (Surinam)

John Macintosh (also McIntosh and Mackintosh) [c1820-1864] was born in Scotland and died on the Coronie coast, Surinam. He became a slave owner through his marriage and the Parliamentary Papers state that he inherited the properrty of his father-in-law James Gordon of Huntly (Scotland) [Parliamentary Papers, 1860].

James Gordon's was in a relationship with an enslaved woman, Betty (also known as Elizabeth). Betty and her three children, who were the property of an 'R Gordon', were freed at the request of James Gordon in 1835. Her children at that date were Jean/Jane Teeder, John Teeder, and Helena Teeder. Elisabeth Teeder and Robert Teeder were born later and in 1841 Elizabeth and the five children were allowed to add the surname Gordon. John Macintosh is named as the owner of 36 slaves in Nieuw Rotternam, Nickerie, Surinam at emancipation in 1863.
