Thomas Butler Parry [1794-1843], born in London, was in partnership in Surinam with Alexander Ferrier and from 1827 they owned plantations Alkmaar and Fredricksdorp on the Commewijne. In 1838 he married Mary Thomson Macdonald, daughter of Rev Donald Macdonald, parish minister of Killean and Kilkenzie, Argyll and their only child, Thomas Macdonald Parry [1839-75], was born there the following year.

In a parliamentary report in 1859 Thomas Macdonald Parry, still a minor, was identified as one of those British citizens who were still slave owners [The Anti-Slavery Reporter, 1860]. When he died in 1875 his estate was worth almost £40,000.
