John Rose was sheriff-clerk of Caithess, held the post of Collector of Customs, and from 1808 until his death in 1818 was sheriff-substitute. He married twice and by his first wife, Elizabeth Sinclair, had:
Robert Rose [b. 20 March 1774] who died in Demerara on 11 January 1805 [Scots Magazine, 1805].
Alexander Rose, a surgeon, who died in Berbice in 1802. Alexander's son, John Bennet Rose [1798-1821], died in Demerara in 1821 [NRS.CC.8.8.151].
John Rose was also master of the masonic lodge and was commemorated by having a street named after him in the New Town of Thurso.
