John Simson (Ferintosh)

John Simson (1783-1843) was the son of Janet Fowler, from Cnocanaraid in Ferintosh, and Colin Simson. His uncle James Fowler (b1759) became minister of Urquhart & Glenmosiston and married a daughter of Alpin Grant, whose family has interests in plantations in Guyana. [OPRs as detailed in Rootschat]

John Simson spend over 40 years in the West Indies and became collector of rum duties for Demerara and Essequibo. He was awarded compensation of £262 10s 2d for six enslaved persons in 1835. He died in Inverness in 1843, aged 61, having returned because of illness. [Gravestone, Urquhart Burial Ground]. On 15 April 1820 he married Jane Duff Grant, fourth daughter of Duncan Grant of Dalshangie (Inverness Courier, 27 April 1820) and a grand-daughter of Alpin Grant.
