Mackenzie-Ross (Aldie)

George Balfour Mackenzie-Ross (1809-1875) was born in the parish of Tarbat (Ross-shire) to George Ross, of Aldie, who from 1820 was known as George Mackenzie Ross, and Catherine Balfour, a daughter of the parish minister of Tain (Ross-shire). He was noted as being 'in Berbice' where in 1862 he married Catherine Elizabeth Douglas of that colony. The couple returned to Scotland and lived for a time on Linlithgow. Catherine Douglas died in Tain in 1898.

In 1869, on the birth of a son in Linlithgow, he was described as George Balfour Mackenzie Ross, Esq., of Aldie, Scotland and Wellington Park, Berbice [The Colonist, 28 October, 1869].

He also had four children in Berbice with Charlotte Bowling (d1888) who all took the surname Mackenzie - Isabella, George, Simon, and William Chisholm [Report of the Titles to Land Commissioners, Berbice (1892), p488]. They lived on part of Lot 35 on the Corentyne Coast, which their father bought for them before finally returning to Scotland.
