Murdoch Jaffray

Murdoch Jaffray (c1784-1864) was born in Dornoch, son of George Jaffray and Harriet Clunas. By 1814, if not before, he appears to have owned plantation Nigg, a cotton estate on the east sea coast of Berbice, for which the slave return was made, in 1819, by his attorney John Scoular. In 1824 he married Helen Murray at Edderton House, Ross-shire. Their eldest daughter, Sarah Eliza, was born in Berbice c1831 but by c1834 the family were established at Budgate, Cawdor, where he farmed 120 acres. He died at Ivy Cottage, Inverness.

In his will [SC24/19/12] he noted that plantation Nigg, of which he owned a third, had been disposed off at a much lower amount than the £9000 at which it was valued at the time of his marriage settlement in 1824.
