Creswell Spencer

For family tree see Ancestry (subscription required)

Cres(s)well Spencer was born in Copthorne, Worcester-shire, in 1781 and was in Demerara by 1807, when he was executor of the will of Robert Watling [E&DG 18 April 1807]. In 1811 he married Barbados-born Mary Oriana Thomas (1792–1859), with whom he had a number of children [EDG 20 April 1811].

By 1824 he was manager and attorney for plantation Annandale and by 1832 was owner of the plantation, receiving compensation of £8748 4s 9d for the emancipation of 156 enslaved people in 1835 [T71/429 p. 371. He died in Demerara before September 1846 [London Gazette].

He had a brother baptised James Mackay Spencer, who died as an infant, and in his daughter death notice [The Times (London, England), Saturday, May 04, 1912] he is referred to as Cresswell Mackay Spencer. This suggests a connection to a Mackay family - and possibly to the Demerara planter Spencer Mackay?
