James Anderson

James Anderson, the son of John Anderson, musician in Inverness, died intestate at Plantation Richmond, Essequebo, on 23 March 1811. John Haywood and Donald Mackay acted for Anderson’s mother in attempting to recover her son’s property [E&DRG 18 Feb 1812]and in February 1812 Mackay sent £20 to Haywood, now in Inverness, to ‘relieve her necessities’ [GD23/6/391/10/1].

Shortly after this a Peggy Anderson placed an advertisement in the Essequebo & Demerara Royal Gazette seeking the return of a runaway slave ‘a Negro Woman, named Lucretia, formerly the property of James Anderson, deceased’. Three years later Peggy Anderson, described as a ‘mulatto woman’, planned to leave the colony with her child.
