Donald Macintosh

Donald Mackintosh (1800-56), born in or near Inverness, was a nephew of Donald Mackay and from 1828 managed Mackay’s plantation Reliance in Essequibo, where he died in 1856 [London Times]. His father, also Donald Mackintosh, had married Mackay’s sister and she is referred to in a number of letters from Mackay to James Grant, provost of Inverness. Mackay had a low opinion of Donald Mackintosh snr and when he died in 1812 wrote that he did not believe ‘that the death of her husband could be reasonably regretted’. Mackay sent £50 to Inverness to support his sister and her children who were, according to a relation, ‘reduced to beggary’ [NAS GD23/6/391].

Mackintosh became a member of the Court of Policy of the colony.
