On 13 November 1794 Robert McBean (by then known as 'of Tortola') married, in Inverness, 'Miss Margaret Macintosh daughter of the late Mr Macintosh of Dalmigavie' (Scots Magazine, 1794). In 1798 he owned a large sugar plantation in Long Bay, in partnership with a William Robertson.

In 1798 he bought the lands of Culclachie (now known as Nairnside) from Hugh Mackintosh, for £5000 but his fortunes fluctuated and at his death the property was sold [Charles Fraser-Mackintosh, Letters of Two Centuries (London, 1890; reprinted 2013), 98].

Their only daughter, Margaret (c1801-1855), lived in Inverness where she was still known in the early 1850s as Miss McBean 'Tortola' [Isabel Harriet Anderson, Inverness before Railways (Inverness, 1885), 152].
