Sugar, Slavery, and men from the Muir

I'm pleased to have been asked to write an article for Muir of Ord's excellent community magazine on the parish's links to the Caribbean. As usual there are so many it is difficult to get them all in.
The article, as it turns out, has a focus on carpenters - beginning with an advertisement in 1825 looking for young men from the Inverness area prepared to serve an apprenticeship as carpenters in Demerara. It describes a carpenter from Conon Bridge who had taught one of his enslaved carpenters to play the fiddle. And ends with the brutal execution of Quamima, an enslaved carpenter who supported a peaceful strike of slaves in Demerara in 1823.

Please, can you change something?Elisabeth Teeder Gordon wasn't married to John Mackintosh. She was his mother-in-law. Ger daughter Jane was his wife.
