Alexander Bruce Morris (1768–1808) was ‘a planter of the Island of Barbadoes [Barbados] and Berbice’ who owned plantations Lovely Lass and Golden Grove (No 25 & No 26) on the West Sea Coast of Berbice. In London on 13 July 1803 he married Arabella Beard (1778–1851), whose brother Henry Beard (1779–1832) was a young lawyer. Morris died in 1808 leaving his estate to his wife and children. From about 1812 Beard had been petitioning the Colonial Office for a West Indian appointment and c.1815 he was appointed President of the Court of Civil Justice in Berbice, a position which until then had been held by the Governor.
Beard was the attorney for Mrs Morris and her children but appointed John Ross as his agent.
