Macleod (Golspie)

For family tree see Andrew Macleod on Ancestry (subscription required)

Andrew Macleod [1780-1856] was a succesful Golspie merchant, married to Helen Ross - the sister of John Ross of Berbice. It was probably John Ross's success, and his continued involvement with plantations in Guyana after emancipation, which gave the opportunity for Andrew Macleod's sons, John and Donald, to go there. On 1 March 1850 a poignant death notice appeared in the John O'Groat Journal:

At Demerara, in summer 1849, John Macleod; and at Berbice, in harvest following, Donald Macleod, sons of Andrew Macleod, merchant, Golspie, both being taken away in the prime of life.

John Macleod was born on 26 July 1818 but Donald's birth is not recorded.
