Merchant houses

Merchant houses, based in the main cities of the United Kindom, especially London, were involved in the slave trade and slave-worked plantations by providing financial services, purchasing the products of the plantations and supplying the goods required on the plantations.

Some merchants acquired a direct interest in the ownership of enslaved people when the planters they were financing defaulted on loans and mortgages. Others chose to invest in the plantations.
