Alexander Auld
In April 1820 Alexander Auld, Esq. of Carcoside [Sanquhar, Dumfries] and late of Demerara, died in Campeltown [Scots Magazine]. In is will [SC15/41/3 Dumfries Sheriff Court] he left legacies as follows:
Hannah Auld wife of Francis Mollison engineer in Glasgow £200
Mary Cassie in Demerara £200
Henrietta or Retta Lawrence in Nevis £100
Natural son John by Mary Cassie £600
Natural daughter Matilda (now in Glasgow) by Henrietta Lawrence £600
He also appointed William Rankin surgeon in Demerara as tutor to his children.
His daughter Matilda [1804-67] married Alexander Hamilton, of Stirling and a merchant in London, in 1830. The couple had six children.
Miss Henrietta Laurence is recorded as a slave owner in Nevis from 1817 (when along with two other women she registered eight slaves) and in 1834 received compensation on the emancipation of one slave.
