Cafe Royal, 19 West Register Street, Edinburgh,  EH2 2AA

This traditional oyster bar is often refered to as Edinburgh's hidden gem (although others may also claim that atribute). This one is right in the city centre and, while well known to locals, may be unwittingly walked past without recognising how unique it is inside. Their website notes : "Opened in 1863, the Cafe Royal Circle Bar is one of the most famous Edinburgh pubs due to the elaborate, elegant stained glass and fine Victorian decorative works which enhance the building".

Listed A. The listing text notes : "Robert Paterson, 1861; altered A W Macnaughton, 1893-5; J Macintyre Henry, 1898-1901; Henry and T Forbes Maclennan, 1923. French 2nd Empire hotel and oyster bar". Actually you can get much more than oysters and drinks. This is a really good place to pop into on a cold and wet Edinburgh evening.
