Chess Report by Martyn Griffiths

The Castell Nedd Chess Club was heaving with children and their parents for the annual Netsima  (web-design company) Neath & West Wales Under 11 Championships.  The event was  sponsored by  Netsima, Griffiths Tuition, Swansea Games Emporium and Domino's Pizzas.

25 children representing 13 schools sat down to play in the Championships.  The overall winner was Evan Spiers of Llwynderw.  He is the reigning joint West Wales Under 9 champion and with 6/7 was a very good runner-up in the Welsh Championships.  Amazingly the five top players in the tournament were all under 9.  Daniel Chung, now of Gowerton, was runner-up in this category.  Daniel's brother, Joel, made a brave attempt to retain the title he won last year but lost to Evan in the penultimate round.

The Neath Port Talbot Under 11 title went to a young man who hails from Waunceirch and attends St. Michael's, Joshua Hanson.  He lost only to Evan in the last round.

The Under 11 Open title went to 6th. placed Matthew Beresford of Sketty with Hussein Haithif runner-up.

There were awards for their efforts to Jan Kiplarski, Zarah Rangwnana, and Jade Wiseman.

The Schools' Team Championship was shared between Sketty and Gowerton.
