London Marathon - Prostate Cancer

BUILDING SOCIETY STAFF TAKE ON LONDON MARATHON

Report by S. Price

Two members of staff from Monmouthshire Building Society, one of Wales’s leading financial institutions, will be taking part in the London Marathon this April.

The London Marathon is one of Britain’s greatest sporting events, combining elite athletics, mass participation and record-breaking fundraising in one race. The course covers a gruelling 26 miles and 385 yards, passing through the streets of London from Blackheath to the famous finish line at The Mall.

Both runners will join the tens of thousands of runners from across the world, including Mo Farah, and take on their first Marathon together at the event on Sunday 13th April in aid of their chosen charities.

Tom James, Management Accountant, has completed over 1000km since April of last year in preparation for the event in spite of the wet winter weather. Tom is running on behalf of Prostate Cancer UK in memory of his uncle who sadly passed away after a courageous fight with the disease.

“After taking part in the Cardiff Half Marathon and beating my own personal best, I decided to challenge myself and take on the world-famous London Marathon,” he said. “Training hasn’t come without its injuries but I’m confident that I will do well on the day and I’m grateful to everyone who has helped me reach my sponsorship target of over £2,000.”

Craig Lewis, Marketing Assistant, is a keen runner and has been preparing for the event over the past few months with the hope of adding the London Marathon to his list of sporting achievements. Craig is running on behalf of Tenovus, the leading cancer charity in Wales.

Craig said: “I’m very excited to be taking part in the London Marathon and feel honoured to be able to raise funds for a charity I feel extremely passionate about. Tenovus work in the heart of the community, providing treatment, advice and support and I’m grateful for the generous donations I’ve received so far.”

Tom, left, and Craig, right, take a moment out of their gruelling training regimes to recreate Usain Bolt’s famous running pose.
