Primary School Quiz 2013
The Falkland Team with DG Cath
The District Final of the Primary School Quiz turned out to be a real nail-biter. Graham Holmes and his team from the Rotary Club of Pitlochry pulled out the stops to provide a great competition atmosphere, but it was the 16 teams of P7 pupils from each of the eight zones in District 1010 who were the real stars of the afternoon. Falkland Primary School and Crown Primary School from Inverness came within one point of top spot, which was taken by another Fife School, St Margaret's Primary School, Dunfermline. A tie-break round was held to determine second and third places.

Quiz Success for Falkland Primary School
Five members of P7 at Falkland Primary School, together with parents, members of staff and other supporters, travelled to Morgan Academy, Dundee, to take part in the Area Final of Rotary’s annual Primary School Quiz competition. They were up against eight other schools from Dundee and north-east Fife, each of which had won initial heats held against neighbouring schools organised by their local Rotary clubs.
The quiz consisted of ten rounds of six questions on topics ranging from Geography, Spelling and Mathematics to Sport, TV and Radio and a final picture round.
At the mid-way break for a welcome soft drink and biscuit, Falkland was in joint second place, just two points behind Ceres, clearly a team to be reckoned with.
The final five rounds of the quiz contained some difficult questions, or so it seemed to the adults in the audience. All 36 contestants kept their heads down, however, with no indication for the anxious onlookers of how sure they were about their answers.
At last the final paper was handed in and the answers to Round 10 given while the team of adjudicators from the Rotary Clubs of Dundee, Claverhouse and Discovery totted up the scores and ranked the teams in order of merit.
There was silence in the Morgan Academy Assembly Hall as David Vernon, Quizmaster and President of the Rotary Club of Dundee Discovery, said he would give the teams in reverse order. Polite applause followed each announcement – ‘In ninth place …’ ‘In third place …’ still no mention of Falkland.
Everyone knew that just two teams would win through to the District Final in June. David heightened the suspense by saying that two points separated the teams in first and second place. And then we heard it, second place for Ceres and Falkland the winners.
The District Final will take place at Perth Racecourse at 2 pm on 15th June. The winning team will receive £500 to spend on equipment for the school. Second and third placed schools will receive £300 and £200 respectively.
The Rotary Club of the Howe of Fife congratulates everyone at Falkland Primary School on this great result and wishes both Fife teams every success next month.
