Rotary Year 2008-9
President's Greetings
INTRODUCTION FROM PRESIDENT 2008-9
Can I take this opportunity to welcome you to the Rotary Club of the Howe of Fife.
I anticipate that my year is going to be a busy and productive year and we will hopefully meet our goals and have fun and fellowship on the way.
Rotary International is still driving towards the eradication of polio worldwide and each club is being asked to do its bit and raise 500 every year for the next 3 years for the final push.
RIBI has linked up with Leonard Cheshire with School 4 ALL in Africa. The aim of this charity is to enable children with disabilities in Africa to attend school and achieve a level of education. At present these children are denied an education and are kept at home. The charity has projects already set up in Kenya and is in the process of setting up in Uganda and it is hoped that each Rotary Club will contribute towards to this worthy cause.
My own chosen charity is DEBRA, this charity raises money for children who suffer from the genetic disorder Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB). These children are known as butterfly children because their skin is so fragile (like that of a butterflys wing) that the slightest touch or hug can cause them to breakout in the most horrendous blisters and sores. These children do not have a great life expectancy and many develop terminal skin cancer. Research into the faulty gene is being carried out at Dundee University and I hope we as a club can carry out some fundraising events so that in some small way we can contribute towards finding a cure.
Howe of Fife Rotary Club is honoured this year in having David Rankin as District Governor for District 1010. David is a past president of the Club. We wish him well for the year ahead and offer our support for all his undertakings.
My personal priorities are to see the Club becoming more involved in the local community and to that end member has been allocated a specific Community Council and have been tasked with making visits to raise our profile and offer our assistance in whatever way we can and also identifying a likely recipient for the Citizen of the Year.
I would invite like-minded individuals to join us to carry on the work of Rotary in our area in the spirit of Rotary and as the objective of Rotary for this year states MAKE DREAMS REAL.
Yours in Rotary
Graeme Bain
