Coffee Morning for Shelter Box

A number of Rotarians from the Club and their spouses came along on Saturday 18th of June to support a coffee morning organised by Maura Hampton a 9 year old girl from Ladybank in aid of ShelterBox a charity supported by the Rotary Club.  The event raised a substantial amount of money which bought a Shelterbox  at a cost of £580 with the balance going to St Andrews Kilrymont to support their chosen charity. Maura assisted by her parents, friends and family worked tirelessly to ensure the morning was a success. The club members brought with them a ShelterBox to give everyone a better idea of how this can help disaster victims. The pouring rain meant that this could not be erected fully, but the gable end was put up inside the hall and the other contents such as wood-burning stove, blankets, water storage and purification equipment, cooking utensils, and basic tool kit put on display. Recent news reports indicate that over 500,000 people have been displaced in China following the worst flooding since 1955, ShelterBox continues to monitor the situation and be on standby to respond with humanitarian aid. ShelterBox has two volunteer ShelterBox Response Team (SRT) members based in China and initial reports from SRT Tony Zhang indicate the government and military efforts do not need additional external support at the moment. However ShelterBox continue to watch the situation closely as it unfolds. ShelterBox has previously responded to three disasters in China including the major earthquake which struck Sichuan province in China on 12 May 2008 caused fatalities exceeding 80,000 with an estimated 5 million homeless or displaced.
