Marathon Girl

A smiling, tired Amanda at the finishing line displaying her medal

Congratulations to our member, Amanda Fleet – fleet by name and fleet by nature! - who completed the Angus Ham half marathon last Sunday, 22 April 2012. The course started and finished in Monikie Park, following a triangular course through the surrounding villages in between. While runners set off in dry sunny weather, that soon changed and they found themselves battling through a real downpour of rain and hail.  "Keeping warm was quite difficult,” Amanda says,“ and, surprisingly after running all the way, I found I was quite cold by the time I finished the race. It probably didn’t help that it was uphill to the finishing line!” Amanda, Principal Teaching Fellow in Physiology at St. Andrew’s University, undertook the half marathon to raise funds for the club, which has decided to donate the money to Chimwemwe Children’s Centre, an organisation based in Blantyre, Malawi, where street children are cared for. Through Amanda’s work with them, the centre has been adopted by the club as one of our charities.  So far, Amanda has collected over £500 from club members and others in sponsorship money. Amanda thanked all those who supported her efforts, in particular Ann Bain, our club President, who acted as running partner throughout Amanda’s training, and stood in rain and hail to cheer her on at Monikie Park.
