THE BRUNNER CUP

The CCBA Premier Team Competition

1932

From the Northwich Guardian, Friday 12th August

STAMFORD PARK 226 v 205 WILMSLOW WALTONIANS

The popularity of Rudheath as a bowling centre was again evidenced on Saturday when a good crowd gathered there to witness the final round of the County club championship between Stamford Park and Wilmslow Waltonians.

The weather was almost perfect, except perhaps for the players, who had to master a rather nasty low wind, which at times played tricks with the woods when in motion, and many end had to be measured with a double pair of strings, making the green most difficult to bowl. ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

1938

From the Northwich Guardian, Friday 15th July

By Thumb Bias

For the first time in the history of the CCABA, which dates back to 1910, the final of the club championship will be staged in Mid Cheshire, at the Farmers Arms, Rudheath on Saturday 23rd July.

The Winsford clubs who contest the match will be assured of a perfect sward and a good crowd, for there can be no gainsaying the fact that the Rudheath green is one of the best for drawing a crowd, in the whole of Mid Cheshire.

WINSFORD LIBS WIN COUNTY CUP

WINSFORD LIBERAL 217 v 197 WHARTON REC

Before a record crowd, Winsford Liberal defeated Wharton Rec in the final of the County Club Championship at the Farmers Arms, Rudheath on Saturday, when 600 people witnessed a strong struggle for supremacy, finally ending in a sixth win for the Liberal club to place them in a record position for the competition.

Presenting the cup to Jim Davies, the Liberals captain, the County President Mr Tom Cowley, said the better team had won, and, while he almost hoped that the Wharton men would break the long sequence of loses since 1910, he thought the Winsford spirit was too good to interfere with the future relationship.

FINAL

Played at Wilmslow Conservative Club on Saturday 9th September.

FARMERS ARMS 213 v 201 NAVIGATION

Farmers Arms of Rudheath won the Cheshire County Bowls premier trophy, the Brunner Cup, for the first time in the 62 year history of the competition when they beat Navigation Hotel by 12 chalks in the final at Wilmslow Club on Saturday.

Both teams had six winning cards, Farmers six losers turned the game with consistent returns, while one of Navigations beaten sextet scored only 16 points. Best win of the day was Farmers Stan Frith, who has enjoyed such a magnificent second half of the season, including his two big money handicap triumphs at Warrington. Stan beat George Crosby 21-5 at a stage in the last four when Farmers were already well on their way to victory.

Navigation captain Arthur Murray whipped his Rudheath counterpart Keith Birkett 21-6 but it came too late to influence the result and the Rudheath team finished 12 points clear to the delight of their noisy following who took over the Conservative club for most of the evening and later returned to enjoy further celebration on their home ground until midnight.

WHARTON CONS CLINCH CHESHIRE TITLE

The men from the Tin mission, last victors in the Cheshire County Bowling associations Brunner cup in 1993, proved too strong for King & Queen in Sturdays final at Budenberg.

They were winners by 14 chalks, taking to three their tally of successes in the Countys premier team competition.

'Its a proud day for the club,' said captain Glynn Cookson afterwards.

'We've been briadsmaids too many times before, so we'll savour what is a sweet moment'.

Cookson, who was on the green when Wharton got their hands on the trophy for the first time in 1985, got the favorites off to a winning start at the Altrincham venue. However it was James Harrop, who ceded just seven points to Billy Stewart, that struck a first blow for the reigning Mid Cheshire bowling association champions.

It earned him the man of the match award too.

Both teams had six winning cards in a close encounter although big win to single figures, this time for Cons Mark Burdon, added to Whartons advantage in what proved to be a pivitol middle four blocks.

They had long since won when Mark Vernon was left on the green in the final head to head with Larry Wells, which he lost to 15.

Cookson received the trophy from Edward Brunner, a descendant of Sir John Brunner who presented the first prize to inaugral winners Wharton Rec more than a century ago.

TIXALL WIN BRUNNER CUP

Wirral Globe, Tuesday 15th September.

THE final of the Cheshire Association's Brunner Cup played at the Davenham Rec Bowling Club on Saturday was a repeat of the 2014 final with Tixall and Gladstone meeting again.

At the end of another tight contest, the winners were again the Tixall Club, this time by 225 points to 209.

The standard of bowling throughout was a credit to both teams and reflected well on the high standard in Wirral.

A 21-13 win for Andy Hayes and two other winners in the first four saw Tixall establish a slight lead, but Gladstone fought back with good wins for James Whalley, 21-13, and John Finch, 21-10.

It was left to Tixall's back four to clinch their victory with another three wins which included a 21-13 by Phil Lee.
