GURNEY WINS

Northwich Guardian, Thursday 28th October.

John Gurney (Owley Wood) won the £250 first prize when he beat Lancashire county bowler Harry Smith 21-18 in the final of the £500 Comberbach floodlit open handicap.

In the semi final Gurney beat Glynn Cookson (Wharton Cons) 21-17 and Smith eliminated Alan Jennings (Crewe PO) 21-20.

BIRKETT FINDS LENGTH

Northwich Guardian, Thursday 24th October.

After trailing 12-7, Owley Wood bowler Keith Birkett found his length superbly to run out a 21-12 winner against Dave Hough (Beech Tree) in the Moore & Brock floodlit open bowls handicap on Friday.

Playing in perfect conditions at Comberbach, one of the best kept greens on the  Mid Cheshire circuit, Birkett picked up the first prize of £300. He beat another Beech Tree player Rod Holding 21-15 in his semi final, when Hough's victim by 21-17 was Peter 'Squibber' Hayes of the Farmers Arms.

Quarter final surprise result was Hayes 21-16 dispatch of holder Mark Winnington (Castle), while Holding eliminated Winsford's only representative Barry Cookson (Wharton Cons).

There were awards for the last 32 players with a total prize money of £1100.

LESTERS LIGHT WORK

Northwich Guardian, 23rd October.

Lester Bebbington, the underrated Winsford bowler who sprang to prominence last season when he won Cheshires 75th anniversary handicap, carried off £300 first prize at Comberbach last Friday.

Lester, who plays for Barnton's Beech Tree, beat Joe Crowson (Coppenhall) 21-11 in a one sided final to win the £1100 open floodlight singles sponsored by Moore & Brock.

In the semi final he beat Colin Trousdale (Coppenhall) 21-15, while Crowson eliminating Winsford's Paul Davies 21-16.

Northwich Guardian, 27th October.

Wharton Cons prolific tournament winner Glynn Cookson was at it again on Saturday, winning the £1400 Moore & Brock floodlit at Comberbach.

Playing on his own green tournament organiser Colin Peters lost 21-16 to Cookson in a fluctuating final, in which he led 13-4 at the half way stage.

Cookson's cash prize was £360, with £200 going to the hard working Peters.

ANOTHER WIN FOR COOKSON

Glynn Cookson followed up his brilliant victory in the £12,000 Bass olympic last week by winning the comberbach floodlit tournament on Saturday.

The Wharton Cons bowler defeated Rob Crawshaw of Sale in the final with a comfortable 7 point margin 21-14.

however, Cookson only just made the final. In the quarter final, he scraped through by the smallest margin possible against Brian Welsby of Warrington.

Northwich Chronicle, Wednesday 24th October.

Ron Lightfoot won Saturdays Comberbach floodlit bowls tournament final, the last one to be sponsored by Moore & Brock who are withdrawring their support after seven years.

The Wharton Cons man made light work of home bowler Peter jones in the semi final 21-14 and then beat Dave Rogers (Wrexham) 21-18 to lift the trophy and take the first prize of £360.

Rogers had earlier dissmissed Terry Hall (Slow & Easy) and Lightfoot's clubmate Keith Burrows.

COOKSON CLEANS UP AT COMBERBACH

Northwich Guardian, 23rd October

A fine performance by Wharton Cons Glynn Cookson won him the final of the £1400 Comberbach floodlit bowls singles for a third time in four years on Friday, by a score of 21-14 against Alan Fidler (St Asaph).

In the semi final Cookson beat John Hubbard (Comberbach) 21-16, while Fidler knocked out Mick Brindley (Stoke) 21-10.

1993

DAVE WINS CROWN

Northwich Guardian, Wednesday 20th October.

Comberbach bowling club completed it's 1993 floodlit competition last week when the crown went to Wirral's Dave McDermott with a crushing final win over Wharton Cons Keith Burrows 21-3.

McDermott had been victorious against Alan Robinson also of Wharton Cons in the semi finals by 21-6 after beating Warrington's Gary Stone 21-11 in the last eight.

Keith Burrows path to the final saw him beat Dave Morrey from Crewe 21-17 and then Wrexham's Dave Rogers in the semi final.
