Beaten in the £2000 Cresta Cars handicap at Harpurhey a week earlier Owley Wood's Jason Cornes again had the disapointment of losing in a major final on Sunday.
After a superb fight, Cornes lost 31-29 to Preston star Brian Duncan in the Dickinson Brothers Mazda Open at Wharton Cons.

COOKSON LOSES MAZDA FINAL

Home green bowler Glynn Cookson was beaten 31-27 by Ian Bottomley (Leeds) in the final of the Mazda £2500 open at Wharton Cons on Sunday.
In a thrilling final, Cookson matched his Yorkshire rival at 24 across, then fell away. Cookson played superbly in the semi final to eliminate favorite Brian Duncan (Preston) 31-21, while Bottomley removed the chance of an all Wharton final by knocking out Ivan Wilkinson 31-28.

Gary Ellis repeated his 2004 success to win the £2570 Wharton Cons Open on Sunday. The Whitefield ace beat Warringtons Tommy Johnstone 31-23 in the final of the Coors brewery sponsored tournament.

The best bowler in England pocketed the £700 first prize for winning the annual Wharton Cons Open this weekend.
Swinton based Gary Ellis, a three times former victor, successfully defended a title ha won last summer after a 31-12 success against Shrewsbury's Callum Wraight, a British Senior merit champion in 2009.
Ellis was pushed hardest by old foe Graeme Wilson (Audenshaw) in the semi finals, squuzing through by four chalks, after ending early the involvement of Cheshire senior merit winner Matt Gilmore in the last eight.
Wraight accounted for Steve Copeland (Oldham) and Tommy johnstone (Poynton), while Castle private A captain Dave O'Brien (Northwich) bowed out in the quarter final stage after a head to head with Wilson.

steve Morrey, captured the first prize in the prostate cancer support group backed Wharton Cons Open last Sunday.
The Castle Private bowler, from Crewe, defeated Stoke based Matt Fellows in the final. Earlier, he had defeated Matt Gilmore, from Wirral and Macclesfield's Dave Jackson to reach the last two.

Organiser Stewart Bailey has described this seasons Wharton Cons open final as the best in the competitions history.
Callum Wraight, from Shrewsbury, collected a £700 first prize followinf a thrilling 31-30 success against Gary Ellis in front of a bumper crowd at the Tin Mission.
'It's one of the finest games of bowls ever seen here,' said Bailey.'And there have been some classics over the years!'.
Ellis took home £300.
