BACK TO BOWLING AS A CUP FINAL VICTOR
The Guardian, Wednesday 23rd June.
LADIES INDIVIDUAL MERIT.
A bowler has been crowned best in the league on her return to the sport after almost two decades away.
Underdog Lisa Kerford defied expectations to win the Mid Cheshire ladies leagues Individual merit after beating four top tier regulars at Moulton RBL.
She surprised even herself.
‘I went along for extra practice really’ said the Rudheath Private bowler. ‘I entered just for the experience as this is my first season back playing bowls for about 15 years. I never expected it to go so well’.
Kerford knocked out a trio of Beech Tree bowlers- Julia Hayes, Julie Green and Val Dale- on her way to the final, where she met Tamsin Birkett (Wharton Cons). There she built up a lead large enough to not have to worry about her opponent’s revival.
‘My approach to every game is the same- take whatever happens as it comes,’ said Kerford.
‘I knew I was playing well, so I just started each round with a clear head and took it from there. Even when Tamsin started to fight back I just stayed calm and refocused. It seemed to work’.
Her reward is to represent the league at the British Crown green ladies bowling association’s champion of champion’s tournament at Blackpool’s Waterloo Hotel in September.
Kerford added,’ I can’t wait; not everyone gets the chance to play there so I want to make the most of it’.
Had it not been a chance trip to Northwich to watch a fried play in a pool match at the Middlewich Road venue earlier in the year, then her story may have been different.
‘I’m here purely by chance’, she laughed. ‘I spotted the bowling green when I came over and was just in time to sign up for the start of the season. I was ready to start playing again so thought ‘why not? I’ll give it a go. Her team mates are glad she did’.
Rudheath top division three after six matches and Kerford has won every block she has played to date.
She added ‘I’m just happy to be out there playing again’.
