A MERRY OLD NIGHT
Northwich Guardian, Thursday 10th August.
Lostock,s Gerald Merry claimed the Roberts Bakery cup with a comprehensive 21-8 victory against Ron Lightfoot of Wharton Cons in Friday's final at Comberbach. Merry had what proved to be the easier passage into the final. First he overcame rank outsider Brian Southern (Farmers Arms) off 7, and conceded just four chalks.
In the semi final, Merry beat Steve Hamman (Owley wood) 21-11. Lightfoot overcame one of Mid Cheshire's senior vets, Stan Frith, (Owley wood) 21-18 in a tough quarter final, and then had another hard game to beat Graham Donnerley (Lostock) by the same score in the semi final.
Merry last won the Roberts Bakery Cup way back in 1981, when he was a member of the very successful Winsford Liberal team.
The total prize money and trophies was well over £1000, with the winner recieving £300. This was presented to Merry on the night by Mike Roberts, director of the sponsors, who wished the Association well and promised to continue sponsoring the event, which Roberts Bakery has backed for the past 25 years. The association thanked Comberbach and club members for the use of their green and all the help on the night.

CORNES FOR SECOND TIME
Northwich Guardian, Wednesday 1st August.
Jason Cornes regained his Roberts bakery cup crown after storming to victory on Friday night.
Cornes, who won the title back in 1984, beat Comberbach's Dave Thurwell 21-16 in the final to claim the £300 first prize.
Cornes from Hazel Pear was one of three former finalists to qualify for the finals, played on a very fast Wharton Cons which tested the concentration of all the players.
The quarter finals saw Alan Chantler, the Hazel Pear bowler, receive a walkover after Beech Tree's Steve Hamman was forced to withdraw on Doctors orders, although he was well enough to watch the unfolding action from the sidelines.
Cornes overcame Andy Jackson from Castle Private 21-8, Thurwell beat defending champion Gerald Merry from Hazel Pear 21-5, while Graham Davies from Winsford Cons beat Casdtle private's John gurney 21-13 to complete the semi final line up.
The semi's proved to be tight, tense affairs with Cornes completing a remarkable fight back from 16-20 down to edge out Davies 21-20, while Thurwell sneaked past Chantler 21-19.
Bernard Roberts, director of Roberts bakery who sponsored the competition, presented the prizes which included a claret jug for the winner Cornes, and £150 and a glass tankard for runner up Thurwell.

COOKSON RULES CASTLE
Winsford Guardian, Wednesday 31st July.
Glynn Cookson won the roberts bakery cup for the fourth time on Friday Night. The Wharton Cons ace defied the odds, which leant heavily in favour of Castle Private, who had four bowlers in the final at Moulton.
Results ran to form as Castle's John Gurney and holder Jason Cornes met in the semi final, while Cookson took on Nigel Faulkner, who beat team mate Andy Jackson in the last eight.
Gurney made the final with a 21-14 win against the Guardian cup champion and Cookson won 21-16 to avert an all Castle Private final.
The last game was a top class encounter between two of Cheshire's best players but Cookson came out on top 21-12.

COOKSON HAT TRICK
Glynn Cookson has added the Roberts bakery cupto the Guardian cup he won earlier this month. Cookson won the Mid Cheshire handicap title for the third year in a row and the sixth time in his career, scooping £300 in prize funds. But the Wharton Cons man didn't have it all his own way and was pushed hard by a succession of the area's finest bowlers.
In the final he beat fellow Wharton Cons bowler Dave Bersantie 21-15, having lead 17-7 prior to a late fight back from the runner up.
And Cooksons semi final against Castle Private's John Gurney was one of the best matches seen for some time. Cookson lead 18-7 and seemed set for an easy win, but Gurney dug in and fought for the final berth, eventually losing 21-18.
The match of the evening though was that between Mark Winnington (Frodsham Red Lion) and Danny Nixon (Wharton Cons). Trailling 13-7, Winnington fought back to level the match at 20 across and with Nixon setting the mark it was the Frodsham red Lion man who sneaked home 21-20 to move into the semi finals.

ROB PROVES TO STRONG FOR FAVOURITE GLYNN
Rob Winnington ripped up the form book on Friday night as he claimed his maiden victory in the Roberts bakery cup final against Mid Cheshire's star turn Glynn Cookson.
The Frodsham Red Lion bowler lifted the silver trophy under the floodlights at Owley wood to prevent Cookson claiming a record seventh Roberts title and his fourth in a row. The elite handicap competition for the area also saw Nicola Dolby make history as the first woman to reach the final stages of both this and the Guardian cup contests.
Dolby took on Cookson in the quarter final stage and pushed him all the way before losing out 21-18. Meanwhile Colin woodward eased past Richie Jamieson 21-12 and Winnington saw off Paul Mackie 21-13 with Geoff Brassington also making the final four edging out Arthur Land 21-15. The semi finals, which paired Winnington against Woodward and Cookson with Brassington, saw comfortable victories for the eventual finalists, Winnington cruising through 21-8 and Cookson enjoying a comfortable 21-13 win.
cookson duly entered the final as firm favourite but his young rival had other ideas to bring the competition to a thrilling finale.
Winnington eventually ended the masters challenge with 21-17 to land himself the £300 first prize and stop Cookson adding the Roberts trophy to the Guardian cup he had won just a fortnight earlier.

MALISCH MAKES HISTORY BOOKS
Tony Malisch struck a blow for the underdog when he claimed a maiden victory in the Roberts bakery cup on Friday.
The Slow & Easy bowler lifted the silver trophy at Owley Wood on his first appearance in the final of Mid Cheshire's handicap competition.
He edged a closely fought final against fellow newcomer Tom Vickers (Wharton Cons) after thwarting Glynn Cookson's bid to pick up a record seventh Roberts title in the semi final. it's a remarkable achievement Malisch, who was ranked as outsider for the £300 first prize before a wood was bowled. George Horwill, competition secretary for the Mid Cheshire bowling association, said Malisch's win a fillip for his fellow crown green bowlers.
He said,' Tony's win gives hope to the other bowlers out there that they can win a handicap title. I was delighted to see him lift the trophy and, as you can proberbly imagine, he was over the moon'.
the night started well for the Slow & Easy bowler, as he saw off Steve Nixon 21-12 in the quarter final. Few gave him much of a chance of overcoming Cookson in the next round, but Malisch would of beaten the undisputed star of the Mid Cheshire crown green bowling scene without the aid of his handicap, sealing a famous 21-13 victory.
He took that form in to the final against Vickers, who had seen off former winner Jason Cornes and James Harrop on his way to the last match, Malisch won 21-16 to become the first player from the Slow to lift the cup.
