ALAN MAKES A GRAND GESTURE

Winsford Guardian, Wednesday 26th June

Alan Robinson won his first major crown green bowls title for two years, and possibly his last, with a little help from one of the men he beat to the prize.

The Wharton Cons ace defeated the odds to land the £1000 prize in Sunday’s Northern club classic. But Robinson put the victory down to Glynn Cookson going out in the first round, as his club mate was then free to study the form and pass on some priceless tips. He was also helped by not having to play Cookson to take the title at Crosby.

‘I was dreading having to play him because he’s got the better of me over the years’, said Robinson. ‘And it’s difficult to be a gladiator on a green with someone you play with week in week out. I think that might have been at the back of Glynn’s mind in his match as well and maybe put pressure on him, i don’t know’.

Kevan Shaw of Westhoughton beat Cookson in the last 16, where Robinson overcome Kendal’s Martin Gilpin 21-16. Shaw couldn’t take a second Cons scalp as Robinson beat him 21-18 to set up a semi final clash with Oldham’s Graeme Wilson, the hot favourite. Robinson added, ‘When Glynn went out the bookies were favouring a winner from either Gary Ellis or Wilson. It’s the first time I’ve played Wilson and Glynn gave me a few tips, but it was my toughest game. I was helped a lot by the green. The ground was tricky in places and very fast so it suited me’.

His 21-19 victory over the man who won £12,000 in prize money last year and is the current Wharton Cons open champion, set up a final with Wrexham’s Andy Delooze.

The advice of Cookson, who had been observing the other matches in the tournament, again proved valuable. Robinson said,’ He told me Delooze was one of the outsiders and lacked 40 yards, so i just had to get my head down and it was mine. It’s one of the top competitions to win and I’m very pleased because its two years since I won a big one’.

Robinson clinched the £1000 with a 21-13 victory, his biggest of the four during the day.

However it could be one of the last crowns he wins as he is preparing to move from Winsford to Scotland, where he is likely to switch to flat green bowling.
