PAIRS WINNERS FOR A THIRD TIME

Northwich Guardian, Thursday 25th August.

Just six days after his triumph in the all England merit, Stan Frith was amongst the prizes at Winsford Liberal on Friday.

In the company of Owley Wood colleague Keith Birkett with whom he shares all his winnings anyway, Stan won the Mid Cheshire Pogson pairs competition, this year sponsored by Knutsford Motors.

The duo had won the competition twice previously in 1972 and 1973 and thus became the first to win it three times. In so doing they kept the title at Owley wood for the third year in a row.

In the final Frith and Birkett beat their great Wharton Cons rivals Keith Burrows and Barry Cookson 15-11 after being 14-4 ahead. There uncanny understanding and Frith's perfect placement foiled the Winsford pairs comeback at the death, with Cookson lying two and hoping to close the gap further, the All England champion showed precisely how he had come to win that title, with an inch perfect delivery.

Thanks to a £150 boost from Knutsford Motors who's sales executive Dave Campbell presented the Awards and prize money, which totalled a record £340, winners shared £120, runners up £60, semi finalists £40 and quarter finalists £20.
