THE SEA HEALS (Satis Shroff)THE SEA HEALS (Satis Shroff) A church is the centre of every German town, But in Borkum it’s the olde lighthouse. Now it’s a museum with whale bones, From the golden epoch of whale hunting, Which brought great wealth in the 18th century. The high sea climate is good for all. The culture quartier is now centred Around the new lighthouse.
Till the 19th century Borkum was divided By the flood into two islands: The dry Ostland and the Westland. The dune landscape is fascinating, With various dune forms and stages, A play between wind, sand and plants, To make an island grow. Borkum’s 26 km white beaches Are unique in their variety.
The wind blows raw, iodine wind to your nose. It’s good for your lungs, skin and circulation. Walk over to the north and south bath, Bathe in the pink, At the free body culture beach.
Sunshine, swimming, watersport, And relaxing ambients; The Wattensee is the biggest wet biotope. The fresh breeze and the pleasant Roar of the breakers. Long walks along the beach, Clear air, a treat for the body and mind.
You can go to the sauna And welcome spas, And chillax with an Ostfriesian Tea ceremony. A walk along the breakers, Is like a big inhalation, And the healing power of the se, Holds on for weeks.
The Gulf Stream brings warm water From the Gulf of Mexico to North Europe, Creating a mild insular temperature. Aerosol particles with salt Are released, When the waves are thrashed, Every breath does good, To the mucosa of your body. Ah, Thalasso, the sea heals diseases.
The bicycle and wander paths are inviting, You immerse yourself in Nature; But refrain from feeding the gulls and pigeons. The beaches are long with fine sand, High sea climate with Gulf Stream balsam, For your body, mind and soul. Just sit and be one with Nature. An open-air fitness programme on the beach, For those who are in search of silence, Just go to the south bath, With its idyllic, tranquil quietness.
Borkum is always in motion, The ebb and the flow of the sea, Moves the island sand masses In certain places And brings them elsewhere. Out in the sandbanks, Where the seals languish, The wind, sea and currents play, Changing their forms And making them wander.
When the sea dyke was constructed An island lake was born: The Tüskendör Lake which means ‘In between’ in Plattdeutsch. The lake is frequented By myriads of birds.
In the north beach called ‘High Riff’ You see hundreds of Kegelrobben and Seehunde. Don’t touch the crying seal babies, Lest they be ignored by their mothers. © Nordseelyrik by satisshroff, 2019
