Zeitgeistlyrik: THE SOUP KITCHEN  (Satis Shroff)

The soup kitchen is busy feeding Germans.
The green, free grocery store,
Run by social workers,
Has long queues.
The motley dressed people
Are talking nervously and animatedly,
Telling how they plummeted
Down the social net.

It’s the old story,
Of the rich getting richer,
The poor scurrying about,
In the garbage-dump of supermartkets.
Foraging for thrown food
To be scourged and served again.
A nation of wasters.
A few young taste-the-waste.

This is the wohlstand generation.
If you don’t like your spouse’s face,
Get another.
Patchwork parents,
Liberal children,
Who know what they want,
But not what others do.
Spass Gorillas in urban dwellings,
Out to have fun.

Rave, techno, disco in the streets.
The schoolgirls look
Like models from glossy mags.
Girls get out of a train,
Vodka and beer in their hands.

Uncouth people at the Rathausgasse
Ask you:
‘Got an euro for me?’
As you give him some money,
'Beggars shouldn't be encouraged,'
Mutters a baldy elderly man.
Will he buy a wine
Or a hamburger?
Your guess is as good
As mine.

Glossary:
Wohlstand: affluence
Spass: fun
Rathausgasse: Narrow lane leading to the town council
