ANGUS WILLIAM NEWMAN

Often simply referred to as "A. W. Newman" in family records.

He was born in London on the 16th January 1859. Married Ida Emily Miller at Arnoldton on the 15th May 1882. She was from the Miller family discussed under MILLERS IN SOUTH AFRICA with 1820 Settler origins and under MILLER GENEALOGY. Arnoldton is a district outside East London (SA). Whether it refers to a church there or the family farm needs to be confirmed.

This photo below shows his family. Note the outdated way of referring to "Mrs A W Newman" rather than using her own name, Ida. From left to right : Ella Maud Newman (my paternal grandmother); Margaret Helen Newman; Ida Emily Newman (their mother); Front row (based on age these APPEAR to be ) Thomas Walter Newman; George Clifford Newman; Frederick Alexander Newman.

He started the warehousing business in East London. It went through various phases with different partners, including his son and also Alexander Richards Watson. It still exists with a different name, but the picture below shows it as a "bond store near the cemetry" of Newman, Wilki and Newman. Don't you love the transport?

A. W. New served on the East London Council. In this group portrait he is at the centre back with the moustache. Others in photo are : back left D. J. Griffiths; back rigth unknown; left seated Joseph Martin; centre John Gately (chairman at this point and mayor when the town council was formalised); right seated W. E. Dickie; foreground James Read.

He died on 6th June 1912. Ida died on the 30th November 1930. Both in East London.
