THESE LINKS ARE SPECIFIC TO SCOTLAND

The County Families of the Shetland Islands : By Francis J. Grant. Mention of Scotts and Watsons (of which Alexander Scott Watson is very relevant). Also reference to Foula and Melby.

Scots in Poland

I also give a reference to a book on the subject in the Bibliography. That covers the period of our family there, but Scottish / Polish links are much wider. These websites discuss that further

Skirving William grave and history. Note that to date I have not found a family connection to this Skirving, but the circumstances influence our story.

Smuggling : This is discussing the Lennoxtown area within the Campsies, but also gives some insight into the role of Excise Men.

A LIST OF PERSONS CONCERNED IN THE REBELLION TRANSMITTED TO THE COMMISSIONERS OF EXCISE BY THE SEVERAL SUPERVISORS IN SCOTLAND IN OBEIDIENCE TO A GENERAL LETTER OF THE 7TH MAY 1746 AND A SUPPLEMENTARY LIST WITH EVIDENCE TO PROVE THE SAME With the a Preface by THE EARL OF ROSEBERRY and Annotation by the REV. WALTER MACLEOD (Scotland Supervisor of excise), EDINBURGH  Printed at the University Press by T. and A. Constable for the President of the Scottish History Society 1890.

A Google digital copy. The lists were drawn up following the Battle of Culloden, but include other confrontations between English and Scots. I do not see reference to Watsons or Skirvings although the name Scot (with one "T" is) and even then don't see any link. But in spite of this the historic description with which it begins is fascinating and well worth a look. And each of the 2590 names has comprehensive information such as "lurker" or the condition of his house. Unfortunately the format even when converted to pdf does not facilitate a digital search through the names so it is a bit ponderous.
