CRAWFORD GENEALOGY

This is a brief summary. For more details refer to their individual sections.

We are well aware of my great grandparents Hugh Crawford and Anna Catherine Cherry. Exploring earlier generations shows that his parents, my great great grandparents, were James Crawford and Rose Anna nee Strain.

James's father was another Hugh.

Rose Anna's father was Arthur Strain.

Marriage of Hugh and Annie Crawford

My great grandparents.

Married 28 November 1874. (The photocopy that I have shows a page from a register rather than an individual certificate. Their marriage appears amongst others.

"Marriage solemnized at the Parish Church in the parish of Seapatrick" of Ireland. Diocese of Dromore. Hugh Crawford was 23, a bachelor and a linenlapper with his given address as Belfast, father's name James Crawford, carpenter. Annie Cherry was 19 a spinster, no "rank or profession" given, from Banbridge, father's name William Cherry, shoemaker (indistinct). No destails of mothers given.

63 Lurgan Road, Banbridge. County Down. (Their then place of abode and work? The advertisements for the Robinson and Cleaver products note that their looms were there).

Hugh Crawford.

Born about 1853.

Linen lapper. Belfast.

Father - James Crawford. Carpenter.

Hugh Crawford died in 1904.  His death notice and will notes:

"Crawford Hugh [284] 23 December. Administration of the estate of Hugh Crawford late of 30 Fitzroy Avenue Belfast. Linen measurer who died  13 October 1904. granted at Belfast to Annie Crawford the widow. Effects £66 11s 9d".

He would have been 50.

Annie (or Anna) Catherine Crawford (nee Cherry).

Annie was born in 1854 (Roots Chat suggests 1855).

Father - William Cherry. Shoe maker.

Mother - Elizabeth Cherry (nee Paton).

Annie died in (about) 1959 thought to be 105 (at least 104).

I have a telegramme from the Queen / Buckingham Palace congratulating her on her 100th birthday. At this time she was at 20 Leith Mansions, Grantully Road, W9, London.

Hugh Crawford appears in the 1910 census, but not that of 1911. In 1910 there were 10 in the household and in 1911 reduced to 9. Presumably this refers to Hugh having died.

The 1901 census notes "wife", presbyterian, birthplace - County Down. This means that Hugh is considered head of the family and has a wife.

The 1911 census notes "head of family". Christian Scientist, birthplace - Dromore (which is in County Down). By this time Annie is the head of the family.
