More can be seen of his mother Ida under MILLERS IN SOUTH AFRICA.

The name Nogs (or Noggs) comes from the Dickens' Pickwick Papers. Such characters were popularised through illustrated collectable cigarette cards as by John player and Sons.

Nevill was in the Royal Navy during WWII and served in the Far East. There was a family story that while in a Chinese port he had broken up a fight over a local girl. The appreciative father asked him round to their home and in the tradition of the time, presented him with the girl as his "possession" and responsibility. He obviously didn't do that, but did keep up contact with her for some year later.

Nevill was a well known shipping and warehouse owner in East London and you will see him and his father, Angus William Newman, mentioned with respect to business that he shared with Alexander Richards Watson.

Norma van As in her book Small World notes : Of Ida's grandchildren, Nevill Edwin Miller (Nogs) Newman, was awarded the Order of the British Empire in February 1978, in recognition of his services as the honorary British consul in East London.

While much of Nevill's role of consul was to do with trade, he was also helpful with regards, travel and passport advice even to us. I used him as a reference to get my national service in the army changed to that in the navy.
