Mary Henderson (nee Crawford) Anderson

Mary is a daughter of Hugh and Annie Crawford.

Born on the 1st May 1877, Banbridge district of County Down.

Married Samuel Anderson on the 26th December 1900 in Belfast.

The 1901 census for 14 Newry Street, Ormeau, Down notes :

  • Anderson Samuel. Head of family; Presbyterian.
  • Anderson Mary. Wife; Presbyterian.

I do not know where the "Henderson" middle name comes from. In this case Down is the city near Armagh.

They have 4 children (TBC).

  • Eileen born 16 April 1902
  • Maureen bordn 23 June 1907
  • William born 2 May 1909
  • Laureen born 4th December 1909 (these dates are questioned)

They are not in the 1911 census for this address, but may have moved.

The three girls were ballet dancers. Laureen danced with Pavlova. Their mother promoted them and the following that I received via RootsChat (7/5/2016) give some indication of the lengths to which they all went. My comments in black.

8 September 1926. "Narkunda" arrived Tilbury, England from Sydney Australia. Eileen C Anderson, artiste, Ivy House, North End Road, Hampstead. Last residence Australia.

3 October 1928. "Alcantara" arrived Southampton England from Montevideo (Uraguay) Eileen Crawford Anderson (this explains the "C" in her name above). 26, last residence England, artiste, 59 Linden Gardens, Kensington W2. Travelling with Laureen Anderson, 18, artist.

10 June 1929. "Scythia" arrives Boston, Massachusetts from Liverpool, England. Maureen Anderson, 21, domestic, born Belfast, mother Mrs M Anderson, 59 Linden Gardens Kensington passage paid by uncle, going to aunt Mrs J Cummings 57 Vermont Street, West Roxburgh.

20 August 1929 "Ranpira" arrived London England from Freemantle, Australia. Eileen Anderson, 27, artiste, 59 Linden Gardens Kensington, last residence - touring. Travelling with Lorna Anderson, 17.  (I suspect this may be Laureen rather than Lorna -  TBC).

The 1933 Electoral Roll shows 59 Linden Gardens Kensington as a basement flat :

  • Eileen Anderson
  • Laureen Anderson
  • Mary Anderson (mother?)
  • Maureen Anderson

Note that basement flats in tenements / terrace housing in places such as London can actually be quite comfortable and spacious.

Where though is William, the brother and son?

Where is Samuel, the father and husband?
