Gardening legacy comes full circle at

Winsford Over Allotments open day

GREAT gardening came full circle at Over Allotments Society open day this month.

The winner of the coveted Dempster Challenge Cup for best overall plot received the trophy from the inaugural recipient’s granddaughter – Winsford mayoress Hilary Kennedy.

Joseph Bratt won the sterling silver trophy 90 years ago in 1926, shortly after the prize was instigated by chemical industry heiress and Vale Royal Abbey resident, Edith Dempster.

On July 20, Joseph’s third generation descendent was in attendance with husband and mayor, clr Mike Kennedy, to hand the trophy to this year’s winners, Ken Nelson and Julie Nelson.

“I was really pleased to be able to present the Dempster Cup to Kenneth. I think we were both a bit emotional,” said Hilary.

“Kenneth was a lovely gentleman, and I believe there was a tear in his eye when he told me it was unexpected.”

In 1926, this publication said Joseph’s prize-winning plot ‘was an outstanding one, and would fare well with any other in the whole of the district.’ Those sentiments were echoed for this year’s winner by allotments spokesman, John Malam, who said 2013’s open day was a standout occasion in the society’s long history.

“We’ve had a very well deserved overall winner. Ken is down every day and done an amazing job creating a picture perfect plot,” he said.
