COURAGOUS CONDUCT OF LIVERPOOL POLICEMEN
At a meeting of the chapter of the order of St John of Jerusalem, held in London on the 11th instant, presided over by Sir Edward G L Perott, Earl, in the abcence of his grace the Duke of Manchester. KP, it was resolved to award the bronze medal for deeds of gallentry in saving life on land to Police constables Robert Nelson (No569) and William Carson (No552) of the Liverpool police force.
The presentation was in recognition of their couragous conduct in pursuing and destroying at great personal risk a mad dog, on the 14th November last, in the neighbourhood of Anfield.

Robert Nelson was born at Lower Brookfield Farm, Arkholme in 1959, he was the youngest of John and Elizabeth Nelsons 8 children.
Moving to Liverpool in the early 1880's, following his oldest brother James (my GG Grandfather), he joined the City of Liverpool Police force, rising to the rank of Inspector. Between 1893 and 1895 Inspector Nelson was the captain of the Liverpool City Police 'tug o war' team that won the English championships. He is pictured wearing his medals, the St johns ambulance medal and the Liverpool City Police good service medal.

INTERESTING MARRIAGE :- On the 5th of the month, the marriage took place at Walton Parish church of Mr Robert Nelson, of Liverpool police, youngest son of Mr John Nelson of Burton in Lonsdale, to Miss Elizabeth Hannah, eldest daughter of the late Mr Garner, Kirkdale, Liverpool.
Mr Nelson is a very highly esteemed in his native village, the inhabitants of which no doubt wish him and his bride every hapiness.

Robert married Elizabeth Hannah Garner on the 5th April 1899 and they had four children,

Florence Elizabeth (B.1905).
From 1910/1911 Robert was the Worshipful Master of his Masonic Lodge, The Cycling and Athletic Lodge, in Wavertree, Liverpool.

EX-CHIEF INSPECTOR NELSON DEAD
Ex chief inspector Nelson, formally of Liverpool, has died at his home at Burton in Lonsdale, in his 75th year.
He organised the Liverpool police athletic society, and was it's honary secretary for many years. He was also captain of various teams (Cricket, Football, Tug of war). Mr Nelson alsp sat in the governing bodies of Football, cycling and athletic associations, and was honary secretary of the Bowring golf club.
The Liverpool golfing alliance owed much of its success to his enthusiasm.
He leaves a widow and a grown up family. The funeral will take place at All Saints, Burton in Lonsdale, on Wednesday.
In Cherished memory of ROBERT NELSON whose noble life ended August 3rd 1935, aged 75 years.
Also ELIZABETH HANNAH beloved wife of the above, died 5th October 1953, aged 84.
