MILLER GENEALOGY

Much of this is also covered under MILLERS IN SOUTH AFRICA. For the following I found both Norma van As's book, Small World and the 1820 Settlers website very useful. However they give little information of where the Millers originated from in England nor why they emigrated.

Again I have been selective in showing which family members led to my own ancestors. Those names most relevant to me are in bold. 

John Miller was born 1790 . The records show him as being a husbandman at the time of emigrating as part of the 1820 Settler contingent. And he was a protestant. He married Hannah Jenkinson  b. 1809.

Their children were: 

  • Sarah Miller  b. 5th September 1829. She married Alexander Josiah Kidwell  b. 1825. 
    • They had 4 children
  • Eliza Jane Miller [1.2]   b. Abt 1832 d. 13 Sep 1910. She married Thomas Henry Grocott  b. 1838 d. 7 Oct 1912
    • They had 3 children
  • Joseph Miller  b. 19 Apr 1834 d. 25 Aug 1905. He married Emily Frances Dennison  b. 14 Jan 1839 d. 15 Nov 1906. They had the following children :
    • Alice Mary Miller +  Jones 
    • Ida Emily Miller b. 1861 d. 1930. She married Angus William Newman  b. 1859 d. 1912. They had the following children :
      • Angus Miller Newman b. 1883 d. 1957
      • Nevill Edwin Miller Newman
      • Margaret Helen Newman
      • Ella Maud Newman (my paternal grandmother)
      • George Clifford Newman
      • Thomas Walter Newman
      • Frederick Alexander Newman 
  • Harriet Hannah Miller  b. 21 Mar 1828 d. 18 May 1873. She married  John Freemantle  b. 10 Jan 1828 d. 12 Sep 1912.
    • They had 17 children.
