An ill wind blew for unfortunate Santana as a deluge drowned out Mets' hopes of higher expectations!
21 June 2009
Tampa Bay Rays  3   New York Mets

Mets were left at sea at Citi Field last night despite ace hurler, Johan Santana, conceding two runs and three hits in seven frames while striking out three batters. It was Ray's first baseman, Carlos Pena, who marred Santana's fine work on the mound and the afternoon for the Mets as he connected with a 95 miles per hour pitch off Santana's making to yield a gargantuan solo homer in the seven inning which put the visitors ahead. At the closing of the seven the Heavens opened the gates and torrential rain fell which prompted the officials to call everyone inside their respective dugouts. However, when the match was resumed Santana was left behind and reliever Bobby Parnell was summoned to the mound to try to put some order to the game and inject some life into the moribund proceedings but he failed miserably to do so. Pedro Feliciano and Sean Green completed the game for the Mets as the latter allowed a run in the top of the ninth which literally put the game beyond the hosts. Final score:   Tampa Bay Rays 3  New York Mets 1.
