A mano-a-mano between Josh Johnson and Johan Santana ended with Jerry Manuel being put in the line of fire as Mets lose all respect at Citi Field last night.
30 April 2009
Florida Marlins  4  New York Mets  3

Josh Johnson and Johan Santana went arm-to-arm in which proved to be a physical exam for both high-profile hurlers but neither took the decision. It was a matter of an unexpected turbulence on the mound when Santana, much to the fans' dismay at the start of the first inning, allowed Jorge Cantu to produce a two-run homer to take the lead. Nevertheless, he recovered his composure and kept the Marlins in check by silencing their artillery to no further runs. He went on to pitch seven inning in which he conceded five hits, two runs while striking out seven batters. He was asked to stay in the dugout for the eighth inning by Jerry Manuel, his manager, even though his team was ahead in that inning. Manuel's decision to removed Santana from the game proved to be a terrible blunder since in my eyes he was producing a master class performance until then and there was not need to be replaced. Reliever, J.J. Putz, was called upon from the bullpen to try to preserve the lead but as it is now customary the bullpen did not respond to the aid of the team as two further runs were allowed and the match was lost by the mets.  Final score: Marlins   4   Mets   3.
