From the outside the character of Jerry Manuel's demeanour appears to be composed and unconcerned as he gives the impression that he is not courting near-washout since his soft, precise speech and good manners rather suggest someone who gravitates towards the quiet life. However, his nonchalant posture has incurred the wrath of the fans and put him on a collision course with the New York press whom are calling for his dismissal after the Mets' dreadful start of the new season. Indeed, Busch Stadium became a deep hole in the ground for the Mets last night, the previous one and the one before the latter as they could not win a game in this particular series. Rick Ankier and Albert Pujols rubbed salt into the wound as they hit three gargantuan homers between them to emphasise the Cardinals' preponderance in this series. It is highly unlikely that Jerry Manuel will get the sack in the first part of the season even though the seeds of that occurrence have already been sowed; nevertheless, there is no doubt that his team lack of consistency is fuelling speculation that his days as a skipper of the mighty Mets might be numbered.  Final score: Cardinals  12   Mets  8.
